If one wants to travel alone, one often has no exact idea for which destination one should decide. In Europe you can travel to almost all countries without hesitation. Here, the well-known metropolises such as London, Paris, Berlin, Rome or Barcelona are particularly suitable for beginners on their own, where you can shop and sightsee as you wish. In a foreign city, e.g. on a long weekend, you can find out for yourself whether you are alone in a hotel, at breakfast, in the city, etc. Problems caused or not. Also islands like Sicily, Malta, Mallorca or the Canary Islands can be interesting destinations.
But where should the journey go, if it draws you directly into the distance? There are safe and less safe travel countries, but which one really appeals to me? Most factors for the decision are dependent on the own interests. Do you prefer beach holidays or are you interested in country and culture? Or is there a country that has all that? Also the budget is often an important criterion, which is why many travellers choose an Asian country. There it tends to be cheap, people are friendly, you get to know many other travellers on the way and the relaxed lifestyle suits the holiday mood. Below I have put together ten destinations with very different priorities and budgets:
The land of unlimited possibilities! Whatever you feel like – Thailand can fulfill almost every travel wish. Here you will find culture, beaches, Bangkok as a pulsating metropolis, islands, rainforests and above all incredibly nice people. It is not the cheapest country in Asia, but you can still spend a great holiday here with a smaller budget. In Bangkok I think you have to have been once in your life. Boiling kitchens, paradisiacal beaches, full-moon parties, Buddhist temples are worth an exciting trip to Thailand. Popular destinations: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and the islands Ko Samui, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Phangan, Ko Lanta.
The country in Central America, bordering on the Atlantic and the Pacific, has a huge and fascinating range of flora and fauna where you can let off steam to your heart’s content. Tours to visit volcanoes, rainforests, coffee plantations, waterfalls and historic old towns, language courses, canopy, social projects, beach holidays with breathtaking sunsets, homestays, etc. A not quite cheap destination, but an absolutely worthwhile and definitely unforgettable destination. The city centre of San José is not considered to be very safe. Very nice destinations are Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo, Tamarindo, Irazu Volcano and Manuel Antonio National Park. The trip can also be connected very well with the beautiful place San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua, which can be reached relatively easily by bus.
Unlike many other Asian countries, Laos has a low population density, which means you can expect a relaxing holiday. In the three most popular places Vientiane (capital), Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng you can observe the life of the locals at the Mekong river, enjoy wellness and fantastic food to the fullest and this absolutely affordable. Cheap transfers can be booked cheaply and comfortably by minivan, while enjoying beautiful landscapes on the way. Also trips to the rainforest promise a good amount of variety. This is a great country that can be easily connected to Cambodia (Siem Reap or Angkor Wat).
USA – New York
What woman doesn’t dream of going shopping for hours in peace without someone whining in the background? Regardless of the fact that you must have been in New York once in your life, the huge metropolis offers countless opportunities for people travelling alone. You don’t stand out in the crowd and can easily be in cafes, shops, restaurants, buses and other places without attracting attention (for those who should have problems). Small drop of wormwood: A not quite cheap destination, especially regarding the overnight costs. Private accommodation is available here, e.g. via airbnb.com or couchsurfing.com.
At the other end of the world and dreamily beautiful! Australia can offer everything a travel heart desires: beaches, wildlife, fantastic nature, safaris, metropolises like Sydney and Melbourne, world-famous diving and surfing spots and last but not least incredibly nice and relaxed people. An absolutely safe destination, but for a trip to Australia you have to dig a little deeper into your pocket. Flights, accommodation and transfers are relatively expensive, but it’s worth it! But as a backpacker in Dorms (dormitories) you can do well. In any case, Australia offers a guarantee for an unforgettable holiday.
Angkor Wat near Siem Reap is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking sights in the world – simply huge and surrounded by fantastic nature. Pretty touristic, but still a good and cheap backpacker destination that can be combined with Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. In the south of the country you can spend some time on the beach in Sihanoukville. In my opinion, the capital Phnom Penh is not necessarily worth a trip, but when travelling on to Laos, one can definitely make a stop here. You can also travel cheaply by bus and boat to the south of Vietnam (e.g. Ho Chi Minh) – a nice trip through the Mekong Delta with its floating markets.
A Caribbean island with a lot of flair, Mojito, oldtimers and high recreation factor. In Havana you can indulge in salsa in the evening, relax on the beach in Varadero, enjoy the sunset with rhythmic sounds in the pastel Trinidad on the stairs of the old town or ride horses through tobacco plantations in the tropical Vinales. A few cutbacks will have to be made in the communist country at the moment (you can’t get internet everywhere), but you will get to know a relatively authentic life. In private accommodations called “casa particulares”, one can feel at home for small money and wander through the winding alleys, learn salsa, improve one’s Spanish or let the sun burn on one’s fur on the beach. One of my favourite destinations and also very safe!
The small country between China and India offers a huge variety for travellers: culture, meditation and yoga, immersion in Buddhism and Hinduism, world famous trekking routes, elephant and rhino safaris in the south, cooking courses, good shopping of local products and great food. In the tourist centre Thamel in Kathmandu you can relax in nice cafés and restaurants and make cheap trips to the surroundings. A great alternative is to combine it with a week-long group bus trip to Tibet. This country is also ideal for social projects.
